Gaming WWDC: A New iPhone–But Not on Verizon

Now that a pair of lost next-generation iPhone prototypes has robbed Apple of the element of surprise, the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference is likely to be a “non-event” for its stock.

So says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who doesn’t expect the WWDC to have much in the way of big “Oh, One More Thing” moments. According to Munster, Apple will probably announce a fourth-generation iPhone at the conference, and the device will probably look a lot like the prototypes we saw earlier this spring.

“Consistent with recent media reports, we expect the new iPhone to feature a front-facing camera for video conferencing, along with a new, thinner design, an improved rear camera, and better battery life, with higher capacity (32GB/64GB) at the current $199/$299 price points,” Munster writes. “We expect the new version to be popular among current iPhone 3G owners (a 2 year-old device) with a significantly different design and feature set (unlike the 3GS).”

The company is also likely to offer an update on iPad sales. Since that device’s launch in April, Apple (AAPL) has announced iPad sales figures three times. WWDC would be a perfect time to do so again.

And Apple may offer a peek at the next version of Mac OS. “Apple may choose to provide a limited demo of the next version of Mac OS X (10.7) at WWDC,” Munster says.

“Software is a key differentiator for Apple but the Mac OS has not seen the same level of innovation as iPhone software in recent years,” the analyst adds. “With the next version of Mac OS X, we expect Apple to bring some of the same innovation to the Mac platform. Multi-touch technology, for example could be a key feature of Mac OS 10.7.”

But beyond these offerings, don’t expect much. As for rumors that WWDC will see the announcement of a Verizon (VZ) iPhone: Don’t pay them much heed.

Certainly, Munster doesn’t put much faith in them. “We believe it is unlikely that the next generation iPhone will be available at Verizon (or Sprint) at launch,” he says. “Rather, it is more likely that it remains exclusively available at AT&T in the US at launch.”

We (Sort Of) Warned You: Twitter Boots Rival Ad Networks From Its Stream

Does your business plan involve running ads in Twitter’s stream? Think again: Twitter appears to have shut out all rival ad networks from its service.

The relevant quote from a Twitter blog post today: “We will not allow any third party to inject paid tweets into a timeline on any service that leverages the Twitter API.”

We sort of saw this coming. When Twitter launched its own ad system last month, COO Dick Costolo made it clear that Twitter would be restricting the way rival ad systems could use the service’s data feed.

But Costolo also seemed to leave room for ad networks like 140 Proof and Ad.ly. The supposed terms: If you use “real” tweets as your ads, you’ll be okay. Here’s an excerpt from an interview I conducted with him on this very topic:

Clients can use our system and other ad systems at the same time. The distinction I would make, or the caveat I would add to that, [is that] we are going to probably prohibit pieces, insertions into the timeline that cause user confusion.

So for example, if someone creates an ad that looks like a tweet in the timeline, but isn’t a tweet–such that if you click on the retweet button, you go to a landing page instead of retweeting the tweet–that’s something [that] causes user confusion; it harms the overall value of the platform, and we’re going to prohibit that.

What changed? I’ve asked Twitter for comment, but I doubt we’ll get more than what Costolo has already offered in his post. The short version: It’s our service, and we’re running it in a way that makes the most sense to us.

That’s fine, and that’s the company’s prerogative. But in addition to the third-party ad businesses Twitter just gut-punched, the move is going to have repercussions with Twitter’s third-party developers, who were already wary about the service’s intentions. It’s an open invitation to them to search for other partners. Like, um, Google (GOOG).

Meanwhile, TweetUp CEO Bill Gross, who is launching his Twitter ad product today, tells me his service won’t be affected by Twitter’s new policy because he’s not placing his ads in Twitter’s stream. Rather, he’s inserting them into Twitter search results his company generates. Seems to me that Twitter’s new policy is broad enough that it could be aimed at TweetUp too. But let’s see what happens…

For Panasonic, It’s Not Easy Being Green

In its drive to reshape itself around the so-called green technology theme, Panasonic is caught in a tough balancing act.

The Japanese electronics giant is trying to shift more resources into environment-related businesses such as rechargeable batteries and solar panels. Yet nearly half of its revenue still comes from the audiovisual segment, consisting mainly of televisions. Also complicating the situation is the fact that its TVs aren’t making money.

Pressured by competition from South Korean rivals in traditional gadgets and appliances, Panasonic late last year acquired smaller Japanese electronics maker Sanyo Electric.

App Watch: Managing Classes on the iPad

Stanford University student Kayvon Beykpour had just finished his junior year when he sold his company Terriblyclever Design LLC, which made customized apps for universities, for $4 million last July. His first app called iStanford let students search for courses, add or drop them and check up on their grades.

In his senior year, Beykpour is now balancing school with a job as vice president for Blackboard Inc., the course management company that acquired TerriblyClever. One of his first projects is a new iPad app that lets students and teachers manage their classes. The app lists courses, syllabuses, grades, and other course information including assignments and handouts. A user could pull up multiple pieces of content and hide them with a quick swipe of their fingers.

The app also lets users create content on the iPad. Professors, for example, can post announcements, while students can contribute to discussion threads. “We want to make this a one-stop shop for school learning experiences,” said Beykpour.

Blackboard doesn’t disclose which schools use the app, but when the app is downloaded onto an iPad, the first page shows the list of schools that provide login access. Among them are Princeton University and Northwestern University.

Blackboard says the app will also be available in mid-June for iPhones, Research in Motion’s Blackberry devices, and phones that run Google’s Android operating system.

Service for Private Google Searches Shuts Down

A service that allowed users to search Google without having their queries tracked has shut down after Google changed the site that the service was using to get results, the service said Tuesday.

But Google said the site was never intended to be used for scraping of results and that changes were made for reasons unrelated to the service, called Scroogle.

The Scroogle project raised concerns about privacy and tracking amid the ubiquity of Google search. Its potential demise also highlights the problems that services face when building their products to rely on other companies, especially if those companies don’t benefit.

Scroogle, which scraped results from a simplified version of Google formerly found at http://www.google.com/ie, touted its service as a way to maintain privacy while searching Google. Some privacy advocates have questioned the search engine’s ability to log users’ internet-protocol addresses, which are used to identify computers, and record people’s search histories.

There are other services that allow users to search without such tracking; Googlesharing.net, for example, uses a Firefox add-on to direct Google searches through a proxy site so that Google can’t associate the information with a particular user. And search engine ixquick.com promises not to install trackers called cookies or to log users’ IP addresses. The site also pledges to delete user data within two days.

In a post on its site, Daniel Brandt, who runs Scroogle, said his site would likely be shut down for good unless another simplified version of Google was made available. “Google’s main consumer-oriented interface that they want everyone to use is too complex, and changes too frequently, to make our scraping operation possible,” he wrote. He said other simplified sites, such as google.com/m, did not provide results that were simple enough for Scroogle scraping either.

A Google spokesman said the site that Scroogle was using was intended to fit within the sidebar feature of Internet Explorer 6 and that it is being phased out along with Google support for IE6 in general. Users who had IE6 with the Google Toolbar installed and Google selected as their default search engine could get results in a bar on the side of their browser, and these results needed to remain simple because of space and other limitations.

But “due to significant decrease in usage, we discontinued this interface and are encouraging searchers to upgrade their browser,” the spokesman said. The site now directs users to download IE8. Google also has been discontinuing its support of IE6 elsewhere and urging users to upgrade to newer browsers.

IPhone Finder Was Reported By Roommate

If there’s one lesson to be learned from the saga of the next-generation Apple iPhone prototype that was found in a bar, it’s to beware of your roommate.

According to newly released court documents, Apple was tipped off by a roommate of 21-year-old Brian Hogan that Hogan was the person that found the iPhone prototype and sold it to tech blog Gizmodo. Gizmodo then splashed details of the device across its website last month.

The sequence of events as had been recounted by Gizmodo and Hogan’s attorney, Jeffrey Bornstein of K&L Gates LLP, was already stranger than fiction. Hogan, a Redwood City, Calif., resident, found the iPhone prototype, which was left at a bar by an Apple employee in March. Gizmodo said it paid $5,000 for the phone, then posted details of it on its website, creating an uproar. Gizmodo returned the phone to Apple after the company demanded it back, but police soon launched an investigation and seized one of the Gizmodo editor’s computer equipment.

An account in the investigating officer’s affidavit provided more sordid details.

According to Detective Matthew Broad, he met with Apple director of information security Rick Orloff and general counsel Bruce Sewell on April 20th, the day after Gizmodo published its piece. On April 19th, Katherine Martinson called Orloff to report that her roommate Hogan was the one that found the iPhone prototype and sold it to the blog. Broad said Martinson contacted Apple because Hogan had connected the phone to her computer and she was worried that Apple would eventually trace it back to her, so she wanted to “absolve herself of criminal responsibility.”

Broad said Apple told him that Gizmodo returned the phone after Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs contacted the editor.

According to an account of an interview that Broad had with Martinson on April 21st, Martinson suggests that Hogan was aware of the value of the phone. Broad said Martinson told him that Hogan contacted PC World magazine and the Engadget blog site, in addition to Gizmodo, to try to start a bidding war among them. According to Broad, Hogan also showed Martinson a camera box containing $5,000 in $100 bills and told her that he would receive a cash bonus from Gizmodo in July if Apple officially unveiled the phone.

What follows are twists and turns worthy of a movie. Martinson called Broad later in the evening of April 21st, reporting that Hogan and a third roommate were aware of the investigation and were in the process of removing evidence from their home. Broad then tracked the pair down, eventually locating a computer, thumb drive, flash card, digital camera and stickers from the iPhone prototype at a church, gas station, bush and Hogan’s car.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s office had opposed the unsealing of the affidavit that contains these details, but Karen Guidotti, assistant district attorney said it “respected” the judge’s decision to open it up upon the request of numerous media organizations. She said the investigation was still ongoing and there was no decision yet on whether the office would make arrests.

Apple spokeswoman Katie Cotton said: “We reported what we believe is a crime and the DA of San Mateo County is taking it from there.”

Gizmodo owner Gawker Media’s chief operating officer Gaby Darbyshire said in an email that “the warrant and supporting affidavit do not appear to acknowledge the sanctity of the newsroom or even address the serious issues at stake,” adding that “the idea that it is a felony trade secret theft to photograph an item that was admittedly left in a bar is ridiculous.” She emphasized that Gizmodo attempted to confirm the phone’s authenticity from the start.

“I think it’s unfortunate that the case is being tried in the media,” said Bornstein, Hogan’s attorney, adding that “there are additional facts and contextual issues that aren’t clear.” He also reiterated his previous statement that Hogan regrets not returning the phone sooner and that he is cooperating with authorities.

If This Is Age of Web Video, Who’s Buying All Those TVs?

Pundits keep telling us that the Web generation is happy to watch TV on a laptop. So who keeps buying all those TV sets?

Check out this chart from Nielsen (click to enlarge), which tells us that the average American household has nearly three televisions. In 1990, the average was two sets per home.

What gives? Mark Cuban, who has been consistently bearish on Web video–except for the part where he convinced Yahoo (YHOO) to buy Broadcast.com for billions–says the answer is easy: “Consumers have made their choice to spend money on new HDTVs. Why? Because they want to watch TV.

And it’s probably good to remind the early-adopter set–like people who read this site–that sating all your video needs with computers and “over the top” solutions is going to be a niche behavior for a long time.

But! There is a cake-and-eat-it answer here too: It’s perfectly reasonable to assume that most people will watch TV on their HDTVs. And then, when it makes sense, they’ll watch some video delivered over the Web on those same sets.

That’s already happening in real numbers. Netflix (NFLX) says nearly eight million people are watching TV and movies via its streaming video service, and not all of them are watching on small screens.

Nintendo, for instance, says one million of its customers are using the Netflix service. And by definition, none of them are watching on a PC or laptop; if you’re using a Nintendo Wii, you’re using a TV.

These numbers will increase as more Americans walk out of Best Buy (BBY) and Walmart (WMT) with an Internet-connected TV, whether they planned to buy one or not.

Over the next few years, it will become increasingly hard to buy a set that doesn’t have an ethernet connection, just as you have to go out of your way today not to buy an HD set. And that’s when things are going to get really interesting.
