Sprint Not Losing Nearly As Many Subscribers As It Used To

“I never said Sprint’s turnaround would be quick or easy.”

That’s what CEO Dan Hesse had to say about the company’s latest financials, which met expectations despite an unpleasant loss. Reporting first quarter earnings this morning, Sprint (S) said it lost 17 cents a share, in line with analysts’ forecasts. Revenue fell two percent to $8.09 billion from $8.21 billion, but was ahead of Wall Street expectations of $8.05 billion.

A decent showing, particularly since the company managed to temper the rather dramatic subscriber losses it’s been suffering lately. Sprint lost 578,000 postpaid subscribers, better than the 623,500 analysts had been expecting and a dramatic improvement over the 1.25 million it lost a year earlier. And the company added 348,000 prepaid subscribers and 155,000 wholesale subscribers. So Sprint’s net customer loss was 75,000, quite a bit less than the 182,000 it lost during the same period a year ago. Could have been better, though. As Hesse said during a call with analysts this morning, “AT&T and Verizon Wireless have many wireless numbers I wish I could report. They are still outperforming us.”

At $4.26, Sprint shares are trading up 4.16 percent this morning.

1980s Nostalgia + YouTube = Pixar’s Awesome “Toy Story 3″ Viral Ad

Good going, Pixar! I don’t really need extra prodding to pay attention to Toy Story 3 this summer. But now you’ve gone ahead and made sure I’m all in, with this excellent new ad campaign.

Yahoo News has the details, but the short version is that Disney’s (DIS) animation unit is introducing a new character for the franchise . And it’s doing so via a fake retro commercial it has seeded on Google’s YouTube (GOOG).

Another Tough Quarter for Nokia

Well, this certainly adds a bit of perspective to Nokia’s rebound story.

Reporting first-quarter earnings this morning, the world’s largest maker of mobile phones fell short of expectations for both sales and profit. Though sales rose for the first time since the second quarter of 2008, they did not meet consensus estimates. Where analysts were looking for 9.69 billion euros, Nokia (NOK) delivered just 9.52 billion. And at 14 cents a share, adjusted earnings missed a consensus forecast for earnings of 15 cents.

There was some good news amid the bad, though. Nokia sold 21.5 million smartphones during the quarter, up 57 percent. That’s quite an improvement over last quarter, though as growth rates go, it pales compared with the 131 percent jump in iPhone shipments Apple (AAPL) reported earlier this week.

In any event, Nokia’s struggle to return to its former glory in the highly competitive mobile market is far from over. Said CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo: “We continue to face tough competition with respect to the high end of our mobile device portfolio, as well as challenging market conditions on the infrastructure side.”

That’s not going to change any time soon, particularly in the smartphone market, where Nokia lags far behind its rivals. As Gartner (IT) analyst Carolina Milanesi notes, “Everyone else has caught up and Nokia has been left behind.”

And while the company is doing its damnedest to catch up, things just don’t seem to be working out. Indeed, this morning, Nokia said it is delaying the launch of its first Symbian 3 devices from the second till the third quarter.

“We will not ship these products before the quality meets the end user’s needs and demands,” Kallasvuo said during the company’s earnings call. “It’s a painful thing to delay something a bit. I am aware of that. But at the same time meeting the quality requirements is the right thing to do.”

Disappointing news given that these are the handsets intended as rivals to Apple’s iPhone and to some of HTC’s Android devices. Pushing their launch date out is going to put the company under enormous pressure toward the end of the year as we head into the winter holidays.

Said Milanesi: “Nokia catching up becomes less hopeful because of these delays. Competition will only get tougher in the second half with the run up to Christmas. We have to see what kind of rabbit they can pull out of the hat.”

Wall Street’s reaction to today’s news? A nasty beating. As of this writing, Nokia shares are trading down nearly 13 percent at $12.86.

Google Buys Video Platform Episodic to Give YouTube a Boost

Yet another Google acquisition: The search giant has purchased Episodic, an online video platform that it will integrate with YouTube. No terms have been announced, but both companies have confirmed the deal.

Here’s Episodic’s self-description (you can go ahead and imagine how YouTube might use some or all of these capabilities): “The platform lets publishers and marketers host, stream, measure and monetize video content. Content creators, marketers and enterprise customers use Episodic to deliver video to the Web and mobile devices.”

It’s the second M&A deal Google (GOOG) has closed this year to beef up YouTube. In February, the company finally finished its acquisition of video compression outfit On2. Note: A clever reader points out that Google’s plans for On2 go beyond YouTube.

Wall Street to Google: We’re Ready for Go-Go Growth Again

We already know that online ad spending is back. Today we’ll get a better sense of where it’s going, via Google’s Q1 earnings release.

Wall Street has taken Google (GOOG) out of recovery mode and placed it firmly back in its go-go growth category: It expects revenue to increase more than 20 percent and earnings per share to climb by nearly 30 percent.

As usual, Citigroup’s (C) Mark Mahaney has a handy “cheat sheet” to help you read today’s earnings news, due after the market closes (click to enlarge):

The Google guys have a frustrating track record of going on at great length during earnings calls without saying very much. That said, I’d love to hear more about the company’s China strategy. I’d also like an update on mobile, particularly in light of Apple’s (AAPL) new iAd platform, which looks as if it is designed to shut out Google’s AdMob and every other competing player.

But I am just about ready to give up on the notion that we’ll ever get significant detail about YouTube’s performance. Last summer, the company teased us with the notion that the video site could start turning a profit “in the not too distant future,” but it has been mum since then.

Two Little Laptops With a Lot to Offer Their Core Users

For all the talk about new tablet computers like Apple’s iPad, laptops remain the computer industry’s bread and butter, and smaller laptops are especially popular with consumers.

So, I’ve been testing two diminutive laptops, both with 11-inch screens, that show how clever engineering can take a familiar device and customize it for particular audiences. These two machines couldn’t be more different, and they are aimed at radically different customers. Neither is a bargain-priced netbook, but both were designed with compactness in mind.

One of these products is from Dell’s Alienware group, which specializes in potent computers for hard-core gamers. The device is called the M11x, and it came out this week at a base price of $799. It’s an attempt to pack much of the power gamers typically tote around inside thicker, heavier laptops into a much more portable chassis. The M11x weighs about 4.4 pounds, which in the gaming world is svelte, and is about 1.3 inches thick.

The other machine I’ve been testing was released by Sony over the holiday shopping season with relatively little mass-market fanfare. It’s called the Vaio X, starts at $1,299 and is easily the lightest laptop I’ve ever reviewed.

In fact, it’s so light, at just 1.6 pounds, that at first I thought it must be a mock-up made of cardboard. The Vaio X is also just a tad over a half an inch thick. Its processor and graphics system are like a netbook’s, so it can’t come close to matching the Dell (DELL) in performance. But it isn’t meant for the performance market. It’s meant for highly mobile users who do typical computing, want to show off something sleek and can tolerate a high price and weak battery life in the standard configuration.

The M11x is a chunky box that, despite its size, is immediately recognizable as an Alienware product. The power button looks like a space alien’s face, and, along with the keyboard and some other features on the front edge, it can be made to light up and pulse in a variety of bright colors.

Inside, it sports dual graphics systems—one powerful discrete graphics card for heavy-duty gaming, and one lesser integrated card for other tasks or when you want to save battery life. You can switch between them quickly, without rebooting.

iPod Compatible Video

This article is divided into four parts separately introduce what is iPod Compatible Video, which video format is better for Apple iPod Video, is my video iPod compatible and how to make the video compatible with your iPod.

Part One: What is iPod Compatible Video?
Part Two: Which video format is better for Apple iPod video?
Part Three: Is My Video iPod Compatible?
Part Four: How to make the video compatible with your iPod?

Part One: What is iPod Compatible Video?

Firstly, I will introduce you what is iPod Compatible Video, iPod Nano Compatible Video such as iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264, the specifications page lists the following:
Apple iPod video specifications from their official website:

H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;

H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;

MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

That’s a little confusing, but there’s only a few numbers you’ll need to remember for each format.

The highest video bitrate with the H.264 codec is 768 kilobits per second. The biggest picture size for your H.264 movie is 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high, the exact dimensions of your iPod’s screen. Your iPod can play H.264 video at framerates up to 30 frames per second. Every one of the applications that we’ll be using encodes with the Baseline Profile. Your audio needs to be encoded as AAC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, and it can be in either stereo or mono. As long as you follow all the guidelines, your movie can be a QuickTime movie or an MPEG-4 movie file.

Your other option, MPEG-4 video, supports a much higher bitrate than H.264 video - 2,500 kilobits per second. Using higher bitrates will also create larger files. The result: you’ll have less space for additional songs and movies. The biggest picture size for your MPEG-4 video is 480 pixels wide by 480 pixels high - three times as many pixels as your iPod’s screen is capable of displaying. Your iPod will shrink the picture proportionally so that everything fits on the screen. Again, the iPod can play videos up to 30 frames per second and our audio and file format options are the same as H.264 video.

Part Two: Which video format is better for Apple iPod video?

That’s a tough question. H.264 is arguably better because it offers high quality and a much smaller file size when compared to MPEG-4. However, both formats look quite good when you encode your video at the higher supported video settings. One thing that most people will agree on is that H.264 video takes longer to encode than standard MPEG-4. This means that converting a two hour movie to iPod video can take considerably longer using the H.264 codec (especially with QuickTime Pro’s pokey Export: Movie to iPod video option). Still, I prefer the H.264 codec in most instances.

Part Three: Is My Video iPod Compatible?
Some of the video files that you download from the web or from file sharing networks like BitTorrent may be iPod compatible - even if they’re not marked as such.

The easiest way to determine whether a video can be played on your iPod is to open the file in QuickTime and select Window: Show Movie Info. In most cases your video should be iPod-ready if the format is H.264 or MPEG-4, the audio is AAC, and the size of your video is 320 x 240 (or smaller) for H.264 or 480 x 480 (or smaller) for MPEG-4. Also, look at the data rate and make sure it’s not over 900 kbits/sec for H.264 or 2600 kbits/sec for MPEG-4.

Part Four: How to make the video compatible with your iPod?

If you have QuickTime Pro ($30 and worth every penny) or the latest version of iTunes (free!), this is, by far, the easiest conversion that we’ll talk about.
In iTunes, after you’ve added your video to the library, right click it. Select Convert Selection for iPod. iTunes will let you know if your video is already in the correct format. If it’s not, your video will slowly be converted to an H.264 video.

UPDATE: I’ve heard several complaints of iTunes creating iPod videos without sound. You should probably avoid using iTunes to convert your videos.

In QuickTime Pro, open your movie and, in the file menu, select Export… and in the export drop-down, select Movie to iPod (320 x 240) and click Save. QuickTime will create an optimized H.264 video with AAC audio.

You may want to go pour yourself a cup of tea or take a nap. If your file is large, QuickTime’s slow conversion process can take several hours.

If you’re an inexperienced user, I recommend using QuickTime Pro or iTunes because they’re absolutely foolproof. However there are other much faster, more powerful applications for converting your videos. Read on!

Don’t have QuickTime Pro? Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter!

Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter supports so comprehensive video formats including converting MPG, MPEG, MPEG2, VOB, MP4, M4V, RM, RMVB, WMV, ASF, MKV, TS, MPV, AVI, 3GP,3G2, FLV, MPV, MOD, TOD to iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264. You can customize your own output video by the settings function. For example, if you want a high quality video you can raise the values of Video Biterate, Audio Biterate and Audio Sample Rate, if you want a smaller file you can reduce the value.

If you want to make your DVD compatible with your iPod and even transfer your iPod video to Computer, you can choose Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Suite which is an all-in-one solution to convert DVD to iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264 and convert video to iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264. Moreover, it can transfer video from iPod to computer. You don’t need to worry about losing anything.

For Mac user, you can choose Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter for Mac and Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Suite for Mac.
