Former Forbes.com Publisher Jim Spanfeller Has VC Money; New Sites on the Way

Former Forbes.com publisher Jim Spanfeller has a new gig: A venture-backed Web publishing start-up.

Spanfeller Media Group, which plans to launch a series of new sites, is close to finishing a funding round that I’m told will total around $2 million. Backers include RRE Ventures, Greenhill SAVP, SoftBank and Lerer Media Ventures.

Once the deal is done, sources say, Spanfeller’s plan is to roll out a series of industry-specific “verticals.” First up: Food.

Aren’t there plenty of food sites out there already? You’d think so, but Spanfeller and his backers figure there’s room for more. After that, they have a list of categories to tackle, with the exception of five they think are overpopulated: News, business/finance, entertainment, traditional sports and technology. Spanfeller declined to comment.

When Spanfeller left Forbes last summer after eight-plus years at the site, his initial plan was to create a sort of repair shop for established publishers’ Web properties. That made sense, given that that’s essentially what he did for the Forbes family when he took over their Web site in 2001. But the new plan is to create stuff from scratch.

Within the Web publishing industry, Spanfeller gets lots of credit for moving Forbes.com from also-ran status into one of the biggest finance sites on the Web. And he gets a fair amount of derision as well, for both a blustery style and a lusty embrace of page views. His most infamous gambit, used more than once: A slideshow detailing the world’s “Top Topless Beaches.”

But the collapse of the last tech bubble and the realization the Web publishing economics require lots and lots and lots of scale have brought many other Web publishers much closer to Spanfeller’s tactics than they’d like to admit. His new challenge: Re-creating that scale with brand new properties.

Newsflash: Steve Jobs Still Not Using Twitter

A primer for the British press (or at least the Daily Mail): Steve Jobs doesn’t have a blog. He doesn’t use Twitter, either.

So any time you read something that the CEO of Apple (AAPL) wrote on Twitter or in a blog, be aware that you’re reading a parody. Something that’s not true. Definitely not something you want to use in the lede of your story.

Medvedev’s Silicon Valley Dreams Won’t Happen Overnight

If anyone thought that Russian President Dimitry Medvedev was engaging in an empty P.R. exercise when he hosted a delegation of U.S. venture capitalists last month in Moscow, this week’s trip to the Bay Area should make it clear he’s really serious about replicating Silicon Valley’s culture of innovation and entrepreneurism in Russia.

Of course, it took decades for the sleepy towns and fruit orchards of the southern Bay Area to transform themselves into the tech mecca they have become.

“These are just the first steps. I hope they are realistic about how long this will take,” said Brian Jacobs, managing director of Emergence Capital Partners, who was one of the 20 or so VCs who went to Moscow last month to build ties with the Russian government and business community and provide feedback on the country’s plans to move aggressively toward a technology-based economy.

How to Remove DRM protection from iTunes

iTunes is a champion of music, video downloading services. The user-friendly iTunes makes downloading music, videos quick and hassle-free; however, iTunes purchased songs and videos will not run on any other media player except for Apple products due to digital rights managements (DRM) which limit usages of devices or files.
This is a tutorial to remove DRM protection from iTunes. Then you can burn the iTunes videos to DVD and convert the iTunes videos to other format files.

Part 1, Remove DRM protection from iTunes Music using iTunes + CD-R/W
Probably the most widely accepted method for stripping purchased songs of DRM protection is burning tracks to a CD-R/W then re-importing back into the iTunes library. A method guaranteed to free you of DRM madness.
Create an iTunes playlist containing your purchased songs.
Insert a blank CD-R or a CD-RW.
Burn the playlist to disk.
Re-import the songs after a successful burn.
Delete the original purchased tracks.

Part 2, Remove DRM protection from iTunes using software
1. Remove DRM protection from iTunes music and videos for free on PC.
QTFairUse. It can Remove DRM protection from iTunes music and videos for free.
QTFairUse(.) for ITunes will allow you to convert protected m4p format files purchased in the iTunes Music Store to unprotected m4a files, playable everywhere. It supports fully automated conversion of all protected tracks in your iTunes library.
It will confirm whether you want to convert all the files in your library. Press 'y' and Enter to do that. Next it will ask if you want to skip already converted tracks (e.g. from the previous run). Press 'n' and Enter to overwrite them, 'y' and Enter to skip. After that, the script will begin conversion of all files in the library. Converted files will have m4a extension and will reside next to their m4p counterparts. To stop the conversion in process, press Ctrl-C in the console window. You can also close iTunes.
If you want to convert specific m4p files, pass their filenames as the commanding parameter. You can do that by e.g. dragging and dropping the files on QTFairUse6.exe. QTFairUse6 will convert them and exit. You can find converted files next to the originals, with m4a extension.Remove DRM Protection

MyFairTunes. It can Remove DRM protection from iTunes music for free.

2. Remove DRM protection from iTunes music on Mac.
The software I introduce:
FairGame It is a freeware to Remove DRM protection from iTunes music on Mac OS X. FairGame(http://seidai.50webs.com/Seidai%20Software_files/FairGame.zip)will convert the songs you bought on the iTunes Store to an unprotected format (using iTunes default encoder) and keep all the original metadata, lyrics and artwork. FairGame doesn't do lossless DRM stripping. It re-encodes protected AAC files purchased in iTMS into unprotected AAC file using Apple's iMovie software.
What you MUST DO (only once) to get FairGame to work:
enable "Access for assistive devices" in the "Universal Access" system preference
select "Place clip in Movie Timeline" in the "Import" preference of iMovie HD
Then you can simply
select some songs in iTunes
click on the "Process songs" button
then don't touch anything and wait until it's done...(FairGame is scripting iMovie's interface to process the songs, don't interfere)

The operation is simple, but the stability would be a great concern, it kept reporting error messages during my try which is really frustrated. Perhaps it's not wise enough to spend hours coping with those errors messages, as there must be some commercial programs that perform much more reliably, like the Video Converter for Mac.

How to Play all Video Files on Xbox 360 with Mac

This is a step by step guide on how to play any video file on your Xbox 360 from your Apple Mac computer.
How to play any video file on your Xbox 360 with your Mac – Only $35.00 Video Converter for Mac can clear up all your problem.

Xbox 360 - Preferably the Elite version… just because its black. And has black controllers.
Apple Computer - iMac, MacBook Pro, Apple Air, etc.
Video Converter for Mac Only $35.00 - Has a Free Trial!

How to play any video file on your Xbox 360 with your Mac:
Step 1, Convert videos to mp4 format that compatible with Xbox 360.
Choose a small video to test for you first video, as encoding and conversion times can be lengthy if you choose a full movie. Try downloading a trailer for a movie in your favorite format that the Xbox 360 can’t read. Like: AVI, and a lot of other weird formats.
Open up Video Converter for Mac. Video Converter for Mac is a phenomenal video conversion tool, it can convert video formats from one to another with perfect output quality and high conversion speed for Mac OS X users. It supports all popular video formats including flv, MPEG1, MPEG2, MP4, 3GP, 3G2, AVI, M2TS, MPEG TS/TP (for HD Video), M4V, etc.
At the bottom of Video Converter, it shows the format we can convert to. Choose MP4. It is the best.
Choose output folder such as “Open Folder”.

Video Converter for Mac - merge

At the bottom right, click on the “Start” button. Then wait… , And the conversion speed is out of your surprise.

Step 2, connect your Mac and Xbox 360
Before you start configuring, open up Terminal (in Applications -> Utilities) and type "ifconfig en0" (zero, not a capital-o). You're looking for the bit that says "inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx". In my case, the number I get here is 192.168.2.1 Second, note down the IP address of your wireless router, which in my case is 192.168.0.1

On your Mac
1. Connect your Mac to your wireless internet connection
2. Connect your Xbox 360 to your Mac via Ethernet
3. In System Preferences -> Sharing, enable Internet Sharing between your Airport and Ethernet connection

On your Xbox 360
1. Start up your Xbox and navigate to the Network settings menu
2. Under IP address, enter the number you got from the "ifconfig en0" command earlier on, but with the final number one place higher. In my case, I take the 192.168.2.1, and input 192.168.2.2 in the IP address box on my Xbox 360.
3. Under subnet, input 255.255.255.0
4. Under router/gateway, enter the number you got earlier from the "ifconfig en0" command. In my case, that's "192.168.2.1"
5. Move onto DNS. Enter the IP address of your wireless router (in my case, "192.168.0.1") in both the primary and secondary IP address fields
6. Leave PPPoE and advanced settings blank (i.e. OFF and Automatic)
7. You should now be able to connect to Xbox Live via your internet sharing Mac

Step 3, Play Video File on Xbox 360:
First, on your Mac, open up your new file in VLC and in QuickTime. Make sure it can play in both (Not necessarily at the same time). If you have done that, now it is time to move to your 360. Follow these instructions:
Turn on your Xbox 360

Turn Xbox 360

Navigate over to the “Media Tab”, and select the “Videos” option.

Xbox 360 - Media Tab

Note: Since the Xbox 360 Dashboard update of about 6 months ago, once you click on”Videos” it will just show you all of the videos on your Xbox 360 hard drive. So presses “X” to change the current source. Then browse down to your Apple / Mac computer. Mine is an iMac.

Click on the “Movies Folder”. That is where you should have saved the file there earlier.
Now browse through your video files and select your sweet, newly converted video file, and play it!put Video on Xbox 360

All the operations is just like pie. So you can watch any your favorite video on your Xbox 36o from your Mac easily Now. Watch and Enjoy it!

IPad Bandit Terrorizes Gotham!

Holy gadget lust, Batman!

Here’s one way to respond to a hardware shortage: A Manhattan Apple store lost two boxes of iPads in two different robberies last week.

Police reports suggest that the same guy (perhaps with the aid of an accomplice) was behind both thefts. In both cases, the robberies occurred outside Apple’s Upper West Side store, when UPS (UPS) was dropping off new shipments of the gadgets.

The store’s employees, understandably, tell the New York Post they now have “a heightened security presence.”

Modest proposal: Why not leverage the legions of crazed Apple (AAPL) fans who are already willing to spend their free time standing outside the company’s stores? I bet you wouldn’t even have to pay them to help police the property–don’t you think Robert Scoble, et al would clamor for a chance to become deputized Apple loss-prevention experts?

Intuit Works to Restore Online Access

Intuit Inc. (INTU) said it is trying to restore service to company websites affected by an outage that began Tuesday night, leaving consumers and small businesses without access to online versions of the company’s accounting and tax software.

Intuit’s products include TurboTax, Quicken and the QuickBooks accounting program used by many small businesses. The online services associated with those products remained offline Wednesday afternoon.

A company spokeswoman said it hadn’t yet identified the cause of the outage, but ruled out a cyber attack. Some Intuit websites were beginning to come back online late Wednesday afternoon, she added.

Stephen Colbert on the New York Times, the Twitter Ban and the Fail Whales

I’ll be upfront here: This is good, but it isn’t the best work from “The Colbert Report.” Still, it is about Twitter, so some of you will want to see it.

Colbert starts out by talking about the New York Times’ (NYT) ban-that-really-isn’t-a-ban on the word “tweet.” Obligatory red-meat line: “Twitter hasn’t banned the word ‘newspaper,’ and those have already faded into oblivion.”

Then there’s some fail whale stuff, too.

The iPad: Is It an “Innie” or an “Outtie”…Only the TSA Knows for Sure

Last week I was in California surrounded by top tech execs at The Wall Street Journal’s “All Things Digital” conference on the cliffs facing the ocean in Palos Verdes, after which I had an epiphany (and a bagel) at an airport in Northern California. I was given a vision of what I think may be the most critical question every citizen of the communications ecosystem must answer in the next few years: Are tablets going to make laptops obsolete?

This Tuesday, millions of eyes will be glued to the season finale of Glee–a popular musical comedy airing on Fox. Excitement is building among the show’s viewership, but my own enthusiasm for Glee has recently given way to confusion over its message.

The fictional high school chorus at the center of the show has a huge problem, you see–nearly a million dollars in potential legal liability.

Google’s 3-D Images of the World Cup Stadiums

Ahead of the World Cup this year, Google (GOOG) sent a Street View team to map as much of South Africa as possible in preparation for a massive influx of visitors. And this week the Internet giant introduced some of the fruits of its labor, including 360-degree pictures from the country’s soccer stadiums and maps with information on some of South Africa’s most important sights.

To get shots from inside the buildings, Google used what it calls the Street View Trike — a bulky tricycle with cameras mounted on it. The video of the tricycle in use shows a sometimes-tired looking employee pedaling through the stadiums; he’s not moving quickly, but he makes sure to wear a helmet.

Users can check out close-ups of the pitch and get a view from inside and outside the buildings.

Morgan Stanley: “IPad on Pace to Become One of the Most Popular Mobile Devices in History”

Apple’s iPad may prove to be the fastest-ramping mobile Internet device ever, and if not that, then the second fastest, after the netbook. This according to Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Katy Huberty, who in an adulatory research note this morning says the iPad is on track to become one of the most popular mobile devices in history.

Driving this thesis: Strong early demand for the device, iPad Internet usage patterns and evidence of netbook cannibalization (and, perhaps, a wee bit of hyperbole).

With two million iPads sold globally in under two months (see charts below; click to enlarge), Huberty’s first point is self-evident. Her second and third are worth a closer look, though.

Huberty’s analysis suggests that Apple’s (AAPL) iPad has already surpassed the Web browsing market share of Google’s (GOOG) Android and Research in Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry.

“Why is this important?” Huberty asks. “Web browsing is arguably the most important computing task for the average user and early adopters are realizing similar productivity levels relative to traditional PCs. Based on our experience with iPad Web browsing, we would not be surprised to see tablet daily Internet usage exceed traditional PC Internet usage in the coming years.”

Which is interesting. In Huberty’s view, the iPad is already becoming more PC than PC companion. And that transformation will likely quicken with the debut of multitasking in iOS 4 and more robust productivity and content-creation apps.

As Huberty notes, while the majority of iPhone/iPod touch downloads are gaming related (82 percent), iPad app downloads are more evenly distributed among gaming (36 percent), content (28 percent), productivity (20 percent) and utilities (16 percent).

As for netbook cannibalization, Huberty is convinced that the iPad is at least partially responsible for recent slowing in the growth of netbook sales. “While we don’t think all tablet sales will cannibalize the low-end notebook and netbook market, we continue to believe that the initial addressable market is low- to mid-range consumer notebooks, representing 120 million units annually,” she writes.

“While the iPad launched just two months ago,” Huberty adds, “we already see signs of cannibalization, mainly in the U.S. netbook market. Netbook units declined YoY for the first time in April 2010, the same month Apple launched the iPad. We attribute the slowdown to iPad sales, purchase deferrals in anticipation of future tablet launches and what looks like the saturation of the netbook market at around 10-12 percent of total PC sales.”

With that in mind, Huberty raised her estimate for calendar 2010 iPad shipments to 10 million from six million and said that Apple may well sell 15 million in calendar 2011.

E-Books Rewrite Bookselling

In the massive new Barnes & Noble (BKS) superstore on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, generous display space is devoted to baby blankets, Art Deco flight clocks, stationery and adult games like Risk and Stratego.

The eclectic merchandise, which has nothing to do with books, may be a glimpse into the future of Barnes & Noble Inc., the nation’s largest book chain.

The Incredible Slipping Delivery Date

Verizon Wireless’ (VZ) newest flagship phone, HTC’s Droid Incredible, is living up to the name: It’s incredibly hard to find in stores.

Impossible, actually. The phone sold out soon after hitting shelves on April 29 and has been on back-order for over a week. Even more frustrating for Droid fanatics, the date for when it will ship has been a moving target, getting pushed further and further back as orders pile up.

Customers can order a Droid today and have it by June 15–if it was ordered a week ago, the ship date was June 8. Either way, few people ordering their Incredibles will get them before Steve Jobs takes the stage on June 7 at Apple’s (AAPL) Worldwide Developers Conference, where he is widely expected to pull the cloth off of the new iPhone.
