Will Qualcomm Chips Dominate The Mobile Devices Market?

Intel has dominated the chip supply in PC industry Since the 1980s. Similarly, Qualcomm will also control the situation in the field of new mobile computing and communications. PC may not go to the end, but smartphones and tablets are growing to the next generation PC, Qualcomm seems to be the new generation Intel. "We have not yet built a brand like Intel, but we are working hard towards the goal." Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs said in an interview in San Diego, California headquarters.

Qualcomm is not a household name, but the technology companies that use its chip are prominent, the first is the Apple. Despite the Qualcomm and Apple don’t confirm that the new generation of iPhone and iPad use Qualcomm's technology, the dismantling analysis shows that these two products are really built-in Qualcomm chipset. U.S. investment firm Charter Equity Research telecommunications analyst Ed Snyder, the iPhone 4S Apple released in 2011 selected the Qualcomm as communications chip supplier, giving up Intel's Infineon department. Jacob said that the mobile Internet "is the world's largest trend". U.S. market research firm Gartner estimates that the number of global smartphones will be up to 1 billion. Qualcomm thought that the technology will be gradually gaining in popularity from a series of decisions in the company a decade ago. Qualcomm shares running at about $65 last weekend, with the increase of the demand for smartphones in the coming year is expected to rise 30% or more. Since the early 1990s, Qualcomm has invested billions of dollars to develop mobile technology standards.

Today, almost all the 3G smartphone adopts the company's communications chip or technology. Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Mobile, HTC and other companies, selling each cell phone should pay Qualcomm royalties about $6. Apple is still confidential, but the benefits are no doubt very considerable. The revenue of Qualcomm is $15 billion and the royalties are about 38% till last fiscal year in September 2011. This profit is equivalent to earnings per share is $3.20, representing an increase of 37 percent over 2010. This year's earnings per share are expected to grow another 17 percent, to $3.75, revenue is expected to grow by 29 percent. Qualcomm baseband digital signal processing technology is very complex, huge royalty income to help further heightening the patent threshold, especially in the 4G LTE technology. Thanks to Apple, the development of mobile Internet is faster than most people's imagination, and smartphones also got a rapid spread driven by operators in order to obtain faster data transfer speeds.

The competitors, including Intel, are working hard to promote WiMax technology, which become the 4G standard, but Qualcomm still focuses on the more complex LTE technology. Optimistic about WiMax technology, science and technology in Silicon Valley, executives rare, but they still hopes the technology will proliferate, and thus get rid of Qualcomm's patent claws.
